French Bulldogs may not have been bred for life on the water, but don't tell them that.
If your Frenchie is anything like ours, they consider themselves the captain, first mate, dock supervisor, and entertainment committee all rolled into one. While they can absolutely enjoy lake life, there are a few things every Frenchie owner should know before setting sail.
1. Frenchies and Water Don't Always Mix
Unlike some breeds, French Bulldogs are not natural swimmers. Their compact build, heavy chest, and shorter snout can make staying afloat difficult.
Always use a properly fitted dog life jacket when your Frenchie is on or near the water.
Bonus tip: Choose one with a sturdy handle on top. It makes lifting them back onto the boat much easier—and preserves your back.
2. Heat Is the Real Enemy
Most Frenchies love sunshine. Most Frenchies are also terrible at handling it.
Because they're a brachycephalic breed (that's the fancy term for those adorable squishy faces), they can overheat much faster than other dogs.
Bring:
- Plenty of fresh water
- A shaded spot on the boat
- Cooling towels
- Frequent swim or splash breaks (if they're comfortable)
If your Frenchie starts panting excessively or seems sluggish, it's time to cool down immediately.
3. Protect Those Paws
Boat decks, docks, and sandy beaches can get surprisingly hot.
Before letting your pup roam, place your hand on the surface for a few seconds. If it's uncomfortable for you, it's uncomfortable for them.
4. Create a Designated Frenchie Lounge
Just like humans, dogs appreciate having their own comfortable place to relax.
A soft outdoor pillow or blanket in a shaded corner gives them a place to settle while you enjoy the day. Most Frenchies would prefer to supervise everyone else's activities from a comfortable position anyway.
5. Bring More Water Than You Think You'll Need
Frenchies get thirsty quickly, especially on hot summer days.
Pack:
- Fresh drinking water
- Portable bowl
- Frozen treats
- Extra water for rinsing off after swimming
Lake water is for boating, not drinking.
6. Watch the Fireworks
If you're boating around the Fourth of July, remember that many dogs are sensitive to fireworks.
Some Frenchies couldn't care less. Others think the world is ending.
If your dog is anxious around loud noises, consider heading in before dark or creating a quiet, secure space where they can feel safe.
The Most Important Rule
Let them enjoy the day at their own pace.
Some Frenchies love sitting at the bow with the wind in their face. Others spend the entire afternoon snoring in the shade. Both approaches are perfectly acceptable.
After all, lake life is about relaxing—and nobody understands that better than a French Bulldog.
